In India, people started to capture and train elephants for war, parades, and worship about 5,000 years ago. Even now, as he grows up, Makbul still spends every day with wild and tamed elephants in the forest near his village in southern India. Makbul follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, even though his mother doesn't like it. He goes deep into the forest to learn the government-employed job of mahout, or elephant handler. When an elephant calf named Vikrama is born, Makbul takes care of it.
