Hurley

Hurley Haywood was cool, calm, and collected in the world of car racing in the 1970s. Haywood won the 24 Hours of Daytona five times, the Le Mans three times, and the Trans-Am three times. He was the perfect Hollywood hero: a strikingly handsome man from a good Midwestern family. But Haywood was often overshadowed by his racing partner and volatile mentor, Peter Gregg. Gregg was the Batman to Haywood's Robin, and his sudden death in 1980 shook the sport to its core. But Haywood had his own secrets. Even though he met a lot of women, and even made some public appearances with Penthouse models, he kept his personal life a secret. With the help of old footage and interviews with Patrick Dempsey, an actor and fellow racer, Hurley gives us a better idea of how Haywood balanced his career and his sexuality. He also asks if motorsport will ever be ready for openly gay racers.
