The Reluctant Astronaut

Roy Fleming, played by Don Knotts, is a kiddie-ride operator in a small town who suffers from a crippling fear of heights. After finding out that his father had enrolled him in the space program, Roy grudgingly heads for Houston. However, once he is there, he discovers that his work is actually as a janitor and not as an astronaut. Roy, whose father is overbearing, does his best to maintain the appearance that he is an astronaut in front of his family and friends. He is driven by the desire to satisfy his authoritarian father. Roy is given the opportunity to face his phobias when NASA makes the decision to send a member of the general public into space in order to validate the effectiveness of a newly developed robotic spacecraft.
