Maude

Maude is an American sitcom that first aired on the CBS network from September 12, 1972, until April 22, 1978. Bea Arthur plays Maude Findlay, a loud, middle-aged, politically liberal woman who lives in the suburbs of Tuckahoe, Westchester County, New York, with her fourth husband, Walter Findlay, who owns a store for home appliances. Maude believed in the ideas of women's liberation, always voted for Democratic Party candidates, strongly supported legal abortion, and fought for civil rights, racial equality, and gender equality. But her overbearing and sometimes controlling personality often got her into trouble when she spoke out about these things. The show was a spin-off of All in the Family, where Beatrice Arthur first played Maude, Edith Bunker's cousin. Like All in the Family, Maude was a sitcom with stories about current events, written by Norman Lear. Unusually for an American sitcom, Maude and Walter were the only characters in a few episodes, making them more like half-hour "two-hander" teleplays. "The Analyst" in Season 4 was a solo episode for Bea Arthur, who talked to an unseen psychiatrist for the whole episode about her life.
