The New Archies

The long-running Archie comic books and characters serve as the inspiration for the kids' television animation The New Archies. Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, Reggie Mantle, and the other teenage Riverdale High School students were recast in the series, which was created by DIC Entertainment and first broadcast on NBC, as pre-teens in junior high. The show had fourteen episodes, all of which were broadcast during its first and only season in 1987 and were rebroadcast in 1989. In the same setting as the animated series, a brief-lived Archie Comics series with the same name was created. Reruns of the show aired on Toon Disney from 1998 to 2002 and on The Family Channel's Saturday morning schedule from 1991 to 1993. Veronica speaks like a valley girl in this series. She did, however, have a southern accent in earlier animated cartoons and the radio show. Eugene, an African American, took over as the "intellectual" figure from Dilton Doiley. Another participant was Amani, Eugene's girlfriend. Red, a dog, was also given to Archie.
